We got to visit Allatoona Pass with some dear friends, Dave and Jeanie.Battle for Allatoona Pass
Visiting Allatoona was Dave's idea, and it was a treat to visit a battlesite not already on our itinerary. We didn't get to do any research first, so it was all discovery. And, quite the workout!
We found out Allatoona Pass was an important railway/wagon trail crossing. Hood tried to take it to lure Sherman away from Atlanta.
Both forts were earthen, and still had the cutouts for cannon!

Allatoona didn't have the support and upkeep other battlesites had. It was pristine, unmanicured, and in danger of being reclaimed by the forest. When you saw surviving earthworks here you saw something special.
